Ms. Gilmartin’s topic of discussion will cover the recent repairs that were performed on The Washington Monument.  In August of 2011, an earthquake centered near Mineral, Virginia shook Washington D.C. and initiated WJE's involvement in the assessment and repair of one of our nation's most recognized and iconic structures - The Washington Monument - which is the tallest unreinforced masonry structure in the world.  This presentation will highlight the process of evaluation, analysis, repair design, and construction that allowed WJE to return the repaired monument to the National Park Service on time and under budget.  Topics will include a history of the monument; the events that led to WJE's initial involvement in the project; the immediate response of our seismic experts and the WJE Difficult Access Team; and the challenges faced to develop a repair design that was structurally sound and historically sensitive.
