Monthly meeting

The Northeast Texas ACI monthly technical meeting will be on Thursday, Jan 21, 2016 at 12:00 noon at the Texas Star.

Lunch will be Sautéed Chicken, Roasted Pork Loin, Whipped Potatoes, Broccoli Mornay and Apple Cobbler

Karla Kruse will be presenting "What’s Wrong With My Concrete? How Concrete Petrography Can Help Answer This Question”

Concrete petrography can be a useful tool to characterize building materials and determine the cause of their deterioration. However, petrography is not a well-known tool and is commonly misunderstood. This presentation will provide an overview of concrete petrography, what you can and cannot learn from a petrographic examination, and how petrographers can determine the cause of typical concrete problems.

Karla Kruse is an Associate Engineer with Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates in Cleveland, OH. She specializes in the evaluation and characterization of building materials. Her work in WJE’s Cleveland materials laboratory focuses on the petrographic examination of concrete, mortars, grouts, stucco/plaster, cast stone, brick, and other construction materials. She also conducts field evaluations evaluating distress in concrete slabs and pavements and in coating systems on floor slabs, swimming pools, and parking garages. Ms. Kruse’s field experience also includes investigation of terra cotta facades, EIFS and stucco systems, and terrazzo. She is a member of ACI Committees 221 - Aggregates, 232 - Fly Ash, and 523 – Cellular Concrete. She received her BS in architectural engineering and MS in civil engineering from The University of Texas at Austin in 2010 and 2012, respectively. As a graduate student, Ms. Kruse specialized in the characterization of cementitious materials and the evaluation of durability concerns in hardened concrete.
