Dr. H.S. Lew, Ph.D., P.E., Hon Member of ACI, Fellow of ASCE and Fellow of SEI

Lew is Senior Research Engineer at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). He carries out a broad range of research programs in the field of structural engineering. He joined the NIST in 1968 and formerly served as Chief of the Construction Safety Section and the Structural Evaluation Section, and Chief of the Structures Division. Prior to joining NIST, he was an assistant professor at the University of Texas at Austin.

Lew is an honorary member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) and an honorary member of the Architectural Institute of Korea. He served on the ACI Board of Direction, on the ASCE/SEI Board of Governors, and on the Board of the Building Seismic Safety Council of the National Institute of Building Sciences.

Lew has served on several standard and technical committees including the ACI Building Code Committee (ACI 318), the American Institute of Steel Construction’s AISC Committee on Design Specification for Steel Buildings, and on the Seismic Provisions Update Committee of the Building Seismic Safety Council.

Lew is the recipient of a number of honors and awards, including: ASCE/SEI Walter P. Moore, Jr. Award; ACI Wason Medals, ACI Kennedy Medal, ACI Turner Medal; and the Japan Society of Civil Engineers’ International Award. He received the U.S. Department of Commerce Bronze Medal, Silver Medals and Gold Medal for distinguished achievement in federal service. He was the U.S. Federal Government “Engineer of the Year” in 1995.

Lew is a registered professional engineer in the District of Columbia, and in the States of Maryland and New York.

Dr. H.S. Lew will be speaking about "Structural Robustness of Multistory Buildings

Since the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building and terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center towers in 2001, greater attention has been paid to vulnerability of multistory buildings to disproportionate collapse triggered by local failure. To mitigate disproportionate collapse, design codes and standards have incorporated requirements for structural robustness. The ASCE Structural Engineering Institute has established a new standard committee to address issues related to disproportionate collapse of building structures and to develop a design standard. However, at the present time, a means for assessing structural robustness is lacking. This presentation discusses a method being considered by the standard committee for assessing the building structural robustness.
