Dr. Sharon Wood, PhD, PE, FACI

Dean, Cockrell School of Engineering

University of Texas at Austin

Dr. Sharon L. Wood is the Dean of the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin and holds the Cockrell Family Chair in Engineering #14.  She previously served as the chair of the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering and director of the Phil M. Ferguson Structural Engineering Laboratory, one of the nation’s leading research centers for large-scale study of the behavior of bridges, buildings, and structural components.

Wood is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the American Concrete Institute.  She currently serves as vice president of ACI and as a member of ACI Committee 318 that is responsible for ACI 318 Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete.  She is a past chair of the ACI Technical Activities Committee and the ACI Publications Committee.

Wood’s research interests include developing sensor systems to monitor civil infrastructure, investigating the fatigue performance of bridges, and improving the seismic response of reinforced concrete buildings.  She holds a B.S. degree in civil engineering from the University of Virginia, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in civil engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  She is a licensed professional engineer in Texas.
